Bistro One46 opened in 2012 and is located between the heritage listed buildings of the Kangaroo Valley Public School and Kangaroo Valley Post Office. This position saw the first restaurant in Kangaroo Valley, Trad’s Bistro, which opened in 1983. While bistro does little restaurant, using the word bistro in our name was an homage to Trad’s Bistro.
The Owner & The Boss – you pick!
Bistro One46 is the creative foresight of Chef Gerald Poelzl, who works with his wife, Nicole as Maitre d’.
Born in Sydney in 1972, Gerald grew up with a large extended family. His parents are from The Netherlands and Austria and his grandmother, who was Dutch, spent many years in Indonesia. All of them enjoyed food and they influenced Gerald’s own enjoyment of all cuisines. Following completion of year 12, Gerald completed his four year apprenticeship under Swiss Chef Manfred Zurcher at Spot On in Randwick. Then Gerald worked along side Chef Lothar Winkler for almost a decade in his SMH One Chef’s Hat restaurant, Lothar’s at Pymble Hill and German café, Brasserie Bit in Neutral Bay.
Gerald and Nicole lived in Darwin and Singapore where there is a melting pot of cuisines and cultures to experience. Gerald was the Sous Chef at the Carlton Hotel in Darwin and Head chef of two restaurants (one seafood & one modern Italian) in Singapore’s vibrant dining and entertainment area, Kallang. Before moving to Kangaroo Valley in 2010, Gerald owned contract catering businesses, worked in 5 star hotels and managed kitchens in restaurants in Sydney city and surrounds.
Nicole enjoys meeting and talking to people and that translates in her welcoming and professional manner in her front of house role. This is, however, a little different to her previous 12 years as a primary and special education teacher. Nicole delights in making guests visiting Bistro One46 have more than just a meal, but a true dining experience.
Married for over 16 years (and working together for more than half that time) Gerald and Nicole, together with their small team, provide a relaxing and welcoming environment to enjoy the offerings available. The modern Australian menu, with European and Asian influences, present a range of meals that include the best of food trends over recent decades. Kangaroo Valley is such a beautiful part of the world with access to some of the most wonderful produce and providors in Australia. We are pleased to be involved in this tourism hotspot and to provide homemade delicacies and meals with fresh, quality produce.
